Train Transfers To and From Lisbon Airport

Lisbon's airport has its own metro train station and passengers should take the Red Line trains from Lisbon Airport that offer direct access to the most important destinations in the city.

It is also possible to travel by mainline train from Lisbon's main train station, the Gare do Oriente, to the stop of Parque das Nações interface (north/south) and from there to Lisbon's airport.

The Red Line also covers the commuter district of Olivais, where nearly 7% of Lisbon’s residents live. Lisbon Airport trains take just 16 minutes to reach the Saldanha metro station in the administrative center of Lisbon. Red Line Lisbon Airport trains first halt at Encarnação, then at Moscavide, followed by Oriente railway station, Cabo Ruivo, Olivais, Chelas, Bela Vista and Olaias, Alameda and S. Sebastião metro stations.

The distance between the airport and the city center that the Red Line has to travel is only 3.3 km long. It is possible to save on fares by either buying a Lisboa Card, designed for tourists staying 24, 48 or 72 hours in the city for sightseeing, which will allow free public transportation on all city trams, buses and the metro, or by obtaining a Viva Viagem Card for just EUR 0.50 at the tourist desk in the arrivals hall at the terminal.

For Viva Viagem pass-holders the metro train ticket will cost just EUR 1.25 for a one-way journey into the city center. A day ticket valid for Carris buses and the Metro last for a whole 24-hour period after validation – there are small machines for validation on the platforms, the trains and the buses – cost just EUR 5.00 per traveler. Children under the age of 4 go free on the Metro, provided they are accompanied by an adult with a ticket.

For tourists staying longer than a 72-hour period it might be worthwhile investing in either the Viva Viagem card or getting a "frequent customer" pass, which is just called Lisboa Viva and which can also be bought for children between the ages of 4 to 12.

Lisbon Airport trains on the Red Line intersect with the Green Line trains at Alameda, which run to Areeiro and Roma Metro and railway stations, where various city buses can be boarded from just outside the station and mainline services are available, as well as running on to Alvalade, Campo Grande and Telheiras metro stations, where it intersects with the Yellow Line.

The Green Line covers not just Baixa-Chiado, one of the most visited tourist districts, but also travels on towards Cais do Sodré, from where passengers can board the Grey Line trains that carry on towards the popular district of Belem and the town of Cascais.

Also cutting across the Yellow Line at Saldanha, the Red Line metro trains from Lisbon Airport offer fast access to Marques de Pombal metro station, where more buses depart for city destinations.

The first Metro line trains leave at 6.30 am from the terminal stations of each line and shut down their services at 1.00 am at night. The station halls, where tickets can be purchased and travel information can be obtained, open also at 6.30 am and close one hour after midnight. Some stations, however, do not open their halls and ticket offices until 8.00 am.
